Michael Thomas

Biography
A Senior Vice President with the consulting engineering
firm ESD, Mike has engaged with 30+ TOP500 clients on the
long-range planning, data center design, commissioning,
and optimization of their HPC environments. Mike has
presented on the topic of data center planning and design
best practices for HPC centers at forums ranging from
PRACE to the annual SC Supercomputing Conference. Early
definition of institutional success criteria, stakeholder
wants and needs, and budget and schedule
expectations—these are as critical as cooling and power
strategies to successful outcomes based on Mike’s
experience. His engagements range from the design for both
NCSA’s Petascale Computing Facility and Indiana
University’s Cyber Infrastructure Building, to the
commissioning of the new infrastructure for Argonne
National Laboratory’s Aurora deployment, to most recently,
working with TOP500 sites planning major HPC deployments
to develop their data center modernization and
total-cost-of-ownership roadmaps.
