TOP500 Supercomputers

Abstract: Now in its 24th year, the TOP500 list of supercomputers serves as a “Who’s Who” in the field of High Performance Computing (HPC). The TOP500 list was started in 1993 as a project to compile a list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. It has evolved from a simple ranking system to a major source of information to analyze trends in HPC. The TOP500 has traditionally been published at the SC in November and at the ISC in June of each year. The 50th TOP500 list will be published in November 2017 just in time for SC17.

Long Description: Now in its 24th year, the TOP500 list of supercomputers serves as a “Who’s Who” in the field of High Performance Computing (HPC). The TOP500 list was started in 1993 as a project to compile a list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. It has evolved from a simple ranking system to a major source of information to analyze trends in HPC. As such it is widely used and cited by numerous speakers and media whenever references to the development of supercomputing abilities are needed. The TOP500 has traditionally been published at the SC in November and at the ISC in June of each year since 1993. The 50th TOP500 list will be published in November 2017 just in time for SC17.

The BoF session serves as main venue for the presentation of the latest list at SC and represents one of the rare occasions of a comprehensive presentation and analysis of new data. The BoF typically includes: Highlights about the new largest systems; An in-depth analysis of changes and developments in technologies, the market-place, and usage of supercomputers; And short discussions of different related topics, which have included in the past subjects such as benchmarking, power efficiencies, and alternative lists.

This years BoF will follow this traditional format and present detailed analyses of the TOP500 and discuss the changes in the HPC marketplace during the past years. It will also focus on discussing additional benchmark candidates for augmenting HPL in the TOP500. The unification of the TOP500 and the Green500 will also be discussed. The BoF is meant as an open forum for discussion and feedback between the TOP500 authors and the user community.
