This page provides answers to several questions that may arise during the effort to prepare and submit a workshop to SC17. However, we recognize that we cannot possibly cover all questions here. SUBMISSION
Q. Where can I submit my workshop proposal?
A: Workshop proposals can be submitted in the official SC17 submission webpage at: https://submissions.supercomputing.org.
Q. What is the format of a workshop proposal?
A: A workshop proposal comprises of several questions capturing the history, format, and needs of the specific workshop as well as a two-page proposal. Please refer to the Sample Submission Form at https://submissions.supercomputing.org for more information.
REVIEW CRITERIA AND COI
Q. Is my workshop peer-reviewed?
A: Yes, workshop proposals will be reviewed by a committee of experts. Each proposal will have at least three reviews.
Q. Is the peer-review process double-blind?
A: No, reviewers have access to the name of the workshop proposers. While the members of the committee reviewing workshop proposals are available on the SC17 webpage, the names of the individual reviewers of each proposal will not be made available to the authors.
Q. What are the main review criteria for workshop acceptance?
A: The Workshop Committee will focus on these criteria: importance of the topics, history of the workshop, quality of the organizational structure and planning, technical soundness, expected level of interest and participation, and relevance to SC. These criteria will be applied to drive the acceptance of contributions that measurably improve upon the state-of-the-art along dimensions that are relevant for SC.
Q. What are the SC17 guidelines for Conflicts of Interest (COI)?
A: A potential conflict of interest occurs when a person is involved in making a decision that 1) could result in that person, a close associate of that person, or that person’s company or institution receiving significant financial gain, such as a contract or grant, or 2) could result in that person, or a close associate of that person, receiving significant professional recognition, such as an award or the selection of a paper, work, exhibit, or other type of submitted presentation.
Authors and Workshop Committee members will be given the opportunity to list the potential conflicts during the submission and review process respectively. The Workshop Committee Chair will make every effort to avoid assignments that have a potential COI.
For SC17, we consider a conflict of interest to exist with:
- Your Ph.D. advisors, post-doctoral advisors, Ph.D. students, and post-doctoral advisees forever;
- Family relations by blood or marriage, or equivalent (e.g., a partner), forever;

People with whom you collaborated in the past five years
— collaborators include:
- Co-authors on an accepted/rejected/pending research paper;
- Co-PIs on an accepted/pending grant;
- Those who fund your research;
- Researchers whom you fund; or
- Researchers with whom you are actively collaborating;
- People who were employed by, or a student at, your primary institution(s) in the past five years, or people who are active candidates for employment at your primary institution(s); and
- Close personal friends or others with whom you believe a conflict of interest exists.
Note that “service” collaborations, such as writing a DOE, NSF, or DARPA report, or serving on a program committee, do not inherently create a COI. Other situations can create COIs and you should contact the Workshop Chair for questions or clarification on any of these issues.
PROCEEDINGS AND ARCHIVING
Q. Are workshop papers part of the SC proceedings?
A: No, they are not. However, if your workshop will use a rigorous peer-review process to select full-length papers, we encourage you to explore ACM SIGHPC’s special collaborative arrangement, which allows the Workshop?s proceedings to be published in the two digital archives (ACM Digital Library and IEEE Xplore).
Q. How do I submit a proposal to SIGHPC for publishing the proceedings?
A. If you hope to publish a proceedings, please review the info at http://www.sighpc.org/events/collaboration/scworkshops right away, as you will need to meet SIGHPC’s requirements and timeline.
Q. Are there important conditions that I need to meet for a successful SIGHPC proposal?
A: ACM and SIGHPC impose several additional requirements, such as the need to have a Program Committee already in place and to meet specific deadlines. In addition, you must receive SIGHPC approval before sending out your call-for-papers. See their website for further details.
Q. Will my workshop be linked to the SC17 Online Program?
A: Yes, we will be able to include the program of your workshop, if you can upload the workshop URL and program in Linklings before October 14, 2017.
Q. Will my workshop be archived in the SC17 webpage?
A: The SC17 archive on the conference site will include the URLs of the workshops and their program. Note that the publication of this material in the SC17 archive is possible only if you can upload the workshop URL and program in Linklings before October 14, 2017.
SCHEDULE AND LOCATIONS
Q. When are workshops scheduled during SC17?
A: Workshops are scheduled on Sunday November 12, 2017; Monday November 13, 2017; and Friday November 17, 2017.
Q. What is the length of a workshop at SC17?
A: Workshops at SC17 are one-day and half-day events. Note that on Friday, November 17, 2017, only half-day workshops are scheduled.
Q. Where are workshops located at SC17?
A: All of the workshops will take place at the Convention Center.
Q. Can I start my workshop earlier or end my workshop later than the time assigned to me by the Workshop Chair?
A: No, you cannot. Agreements with the Convention Center do not allow us to extend the use of the rooms beyond the time allocated to your workshop by the Workshop Chair. Violation of the agreements may result in fines that the Technical Program may forward to the General Chair(s) of the specific workshop.
FOOD AND COFFEE BREAKS
Q. Are coffee breaks provided to workshops?
A: Yes, they are. Two 30-minute coffee breaks at 10:30 and 3:00 are provided on Sunday and Monday; one 30-minute coffee break at 10:30 is provided on Friday.
Q. Do workshop attendees receive lunches as part of the registration fee?
A: No, lunches are on your own. We will work with the Convention Center to assure easy access to food charts or restaurants.
Q. Can I provide lunches to my workshop attendees?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
INFRASTRUCTURE
Q. What infrastructures are provided to each workshop?
A: Workshops are assigned a room in a classroom or theater format with standard AV facilities (i.e., projector, microphone and podium, wireless lapel microphone or wireless handheld microphone, and projection screen).
Q. Can I have poster boards in the room assigned to me for my workshop?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
Q. Can I have roundtables at my workshop?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
Q. Can I have wired Internet connection at my workshop?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
Q. Can I have power strips on the tables or under the chairs at my workshop?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
Q. Can I record talks at the workshop?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
REGISTRATION
Q. Can I have complimentary registration for the workshop keynote speaker(s) or the organizers?
A: No, this request cannot be accommodated within current conference policies and procedures.
Q. What is the fee to attend one or multiple workshops?
A: Please refer to the SC17 webpage for the exact registration fees. Note that different registration fees may be applicable depending on whether you have a regular technical program registration or not.
Q. Shall I register for a specific workshop?
A: No, a workshop registration is for one or multiple days during which you have access to any scheduled workshop.
